Post Convention Call to Action

You heard the woman: Do Something

By Kelly Fenton

DPOC vice chair

The vision and light emanating from the Democratic National Convention that ended last night stood in stark contrast to the bleakness the Republicans foisted on us just a month earlier. Their themes were grievance, decline and the past. That is the default mode of a party devoid of ideas or a path forward … and in thrall to a cult.

The Democratic themes that collided into and gave way to one another these past four days were all hopeful ones: Freedom, Decency, Democracy, Respect, Equality. All suffused with joy and laughter and grace and love. And all culminating with that absolute banger of a speech from Vice President Harris!

What was the theme that most resonated with you?

The one I take away following a week of celebration and raucous enthusiasm is a little less enthralling than any of those above. Not as much the radiant flower as the soil from which it sprang.

The one I take away was delivered near the end of Michelle Obama’s magnificent speech on Tuesday. And it came down to two words: Do. Something.

Listen, we all deserved those highs of this past week, no doubt. We have endured, from the abomination of the Trump presidency to the uncertainty of this campaign and the trauma it triggered. It feels good to feel good again. And it feels good to be on the offensive.

This election is now for us to seize. But seize is an active verb. And we can’t just count on others to do the seizing. Look upon what we are asking of you not as a daunting task but as a generational opportunity. When we win in November and vanquish Trump forever – and, with your help, we will – you will want to be among the vanquishers. Trust me. I was there in 2020 for the first vanquishing and the elation of the victory was multiplied knowing I had done my small part to make it happen.

Talking to voters is the No. 1 way to win elections. We know that. Soon it will be pretty much all Democrats we are talking to, making absolutely certain they have a plan to vote. For an election that could come down to as few as three votes per ward, what you do knocking one turf just might get us one of those.

Folks, people in great numbers are stepping into their fear over this past month, emboldened by those two dynamos, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, and by the sacrifice and hard work of all our many candidates here in Northeast Wisconsin. Two weeks ago we had a dozen first-time canvassers. This week we are slated to have nearly a dozen more.

This is what momentum looks like. People are ready to fight.

And, as the Vice President likes to say, When We Fight We Win.

Sign up for this weekend of action (this Saturday or Sunday) or for any shift listed on our calendar through Election Day!
