Call to Action: Contact the JFC about cuts to higher ed
We have received and urgent call to action from our area Democratic legislators, though the urgency is state-wide.
Robin Vos and the Republican members of the Joint Finance Committee are threatening to cut $87 million from the Universities of Wisconsin. This is not only unconscionable given the state’s 4.3 billion surplus it would be catastrophic to the state in many ways. Vos is citing “political correctness” and “lack of political diversity on campuses” as a reason for considering the cuts.
It is imperative you send an email to each of the Joint Finance Committee members urging them not to take this action. The list of email links is below the talking points. You can send one email and copy and paste each of their email addresses into that. For you convenience we put all the emails together for on simple copy and paste. Thanks for taking the action. Our democracy depends on you.
Here is a list of talking points. Use them all or use some of them. Or use your own.
- Cutting the budget of the UW System is a dangerous and counterproductive thing to do.
- We would lose thousands of students to out of state universities if programs are forced to cut staff or entire programs are forced to shut down.
- It would be irresponsible to do this even if the state didn’t have a $4.3 billion surplus. Why would we do harm to the university system – and ultimately, the state economy – when the state budget is not only solvent but in significant surplus?
- Losing students means businesses are also losing potential employees down the road. When business loses its employee pool in the state, those businesses move to states that support higher education that feeds that business’s needs.
- This threatens potentially life-saving research
- Gov. Evers already lowered the Board of Regents request by $150 million. Cutting an additional $87 is simply wrong and shortsighted. That it would be done out of political spite is not the Wisconsin way. Or shouldn’t be.
- Higher education is investment, pure and simple. You are hurting young citizens and hampering their opportunities when you make such cuts.
