Look to history for stories of defiance, persistence, hope By Emily Tseffos, DPOC chair Many of us are on an edge right now - holding our breath and bracing for a second Trump term. That profound sense of unease you feel? You’re not alone. For some, it is the fear of losing rights that were hard-fought and hard-won. For others, it’s the worry that our most vulnerable neighbors — those struggling to make ends meet, immigrants seeking safety and opportunity, or the children we are trying to raise in this often heartbreaking world — will continue to bear the brunt of inequities. It’s easy to feel small, powerless, even defeated in these moments. But history tells us another story: one where ordinary people, armed with persistence, courage, and collective action, can challenge the mightiest systems and achieve worthwhile progress. I’ve been thinking a lot about a biblical story I learned back when I was a child lately - the story of David and Goliath. It’s a pretty powerful metaphor ...

Save the Fox Campus

Image
As part of the North OAT’s efforts to get involved in important community affairs, we are asking you to take action to help save some valuable resources that are being threatened by the closure of the UW-Fox Valley campus in June.  It’s sad enough that folks are losing jobs and students are losing a local educational resource but the future of so many popular facilities connected to the campus is suddenly in doubt as well. That includes the Barlow Planetarium (27,000 visitors, including 18,000 students); the Arts Center which houses the Black Box Theatre and which serves as valuable space for 17 community groups; The Earth Science Museum (15-20,000 public school visitors last year); the Children’s Center which will mean the loss of yet another already scarce childcare facility; the Community Garden and so much locally produced fresh food; and so much more. What can we do? Visit the Save the Fox Campus website and check out the Action Steps they recommend. Write the chancellor; wr...

Write your legislators today!

Let's stop this before it's too late The Wisconsin GOP is at it again, attempting to enshrine in our Constitution one of the  most restrictive voter laws in the nation -- the voter ID law. It is already the law in this state as of 2016 but making it into a constitutional amendment will make it nearly impossible to ever remove it.    They are trying to rush it through so time is of the utmost.    Now, thanks to fair maps that hold GOP legislators accountable, our pressure can have impact. Please  find and contact  your state representative and state senator (even if they are on our side) and urge them to vote no. Below is a  sample message . Use the appropriate Joint Resolution reference depending on whether you are contacting your state representative (Assembly Resolution 1) or state senator (Senate Resolution 2).  Include your name and city at the bottom.      I am writing to urge you to vote no on the divisive, confusi...

December Newsletter

In the December Newsletter The fight's still in us! Gov. Evers' Budget Listening Session Where do we go from here? State Supreme Court Race Seeking Candidates for local offices Holiday Party A letter to the editor that says it all Bring Your Own Book   Outagamie Dems bounce back after tough election By Kelly Fenton The only way to escape the reality we are facing over the next four years is to tune out. And that only works if we are privileged enough to escape the draconian impact of Trump’s extreme policy.    This was the path I felt I'd be inclined to take if the unthinkable came to pass. Because, I thought, if America chose the most morally depraved public figure in our lifetimes  again  less than four years after he had tried to steal a presidential election and foment an insurrection, how could  anything  any further matter? Gaslighting, shamelessness, nihilism … these are powerful weapons in the MAGA arsenal. They are designed to elicit re...
