Happy New Year ... the work continues |
We hope the holidays are a time of joy and rejuvenation after a tough couple of months that have left so many of us shocked, deflated and, frankly, still reeling.
So take the time you need to process our new (and old) ugly reality. But the truth is the new year will be making immediate demands on us to stay in the fight. We need to notch some critical victories in April to keep Appleton and Wisconsin moving in the right direction. Never forget our city is more progressive with every election and, thanks to fair maps, our state is reasserting the proud democratic values the GOP has attempted to squelch over the past 15 years.
To that end, holding on to a 4-3 progressive majority on our state Supreme Court is a must if we are to retain those fair maps that have Democrats on the cusp of regaining a legislative majority. Susan Crawford is an outstanding judge who must defeat Bad Brad Schimel, her opponent and the former attorney general under Scott Walker.
There is also the state school superintendent election as well as two school board races and a slew of Appleton Common Council contests in April, with potential primaries in February. Get your dialing fingers in shape and keep your coats, hats and gloves within reach as we let voters know what’s at stake. Check outagamiedems.org after the new year for candidate endorsements and information as well as voter outreach opportunities.
Happy Holidays and thanks for all you do. |
Fighting for the truth and the marginalized |
More and more we are coming to recognize what an outsize role disinformation from the right played in Trump’s election. It’s not going away so it is up to us to get busy and push back whenever and wherever we see it. In addition we will be looking to stand up against actions the Trump administration is sure to take against the most marginalized among us, be it immigrants or the LGTBQ+ community. To wit, we are creating a Rapid Response Team for whatever 2025 throws our way. The team will be tasked with monitoring, then formulating a response to the lies and nonsense being tossed around via some of our local right-wing social media as well as showing up in protest for the folks certain to be at the top of Trump’s target lists. Sooooo..... are you a doer? Are you willing to make noise? Do you have a list of contacts you can activate quickly? Are you ready to take immediate action as required? Will you show up at any time or place? Are you willing to attend the ACLU training we are organizing? Then we need you! Stay tuned for details. This is how we demonstrate our power and resolve. |
We need you in the game ... more than ever! |
It’s not a complaint, it’s a call to action: Too few folks are doing too much of the work!
Please consider joining one or more committees as the new year begins. We really do need people in the game, not just sitting on the sidelines offering suggestions. We have so many opportunities for you to help, from office staff to events to political outreach and so much more – 14 categories in all. Fill out his form and join us, won’t you? |
Judge Crawford to speak at our January meeting |
State Supreme Court candidate Susan Crawford will be speaking at the DPOC monthly meeting on Jan. 13. Come learn about what's at stake in April as we try to hold on to the 4-3 progressive majority and save our fair maps.
Also, due to some confusion during the voting for officers at our holiday party earlier this month, we will be taking a vote for DPOC treasurer during the meeting.
The candidates are Alyssa Vandenburg and Sally Huntington.
Current DPOC members will be eligible to cast a secret ballot vote during the meeting. We apologize for the confusion and hope to see you there next month.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
Speaking of fair maps, please check out Law Forward, the Wisconsin law firm that has been on the front lines fighting to keep democracy thriving in Wisconsin. If you're able, consider sending a few dollars their way. |
Not yet a member of DPOC? It's easy to join |
The most common response when inviting volunteers to become a member is, "You mean I'm not already?" Well, yes, you are in the sense of belonging and finding meaning as part of the team that works to elect democrats. But when you formally become a member of the Outagamie Dems you also become a member of the Wisconsin state party (membership does not include the National Democratic Party).
A portion of your annual dues remain within the county party and we count on that to help us stay in our fantastic downtown office. Also, as a member you can vote in county, district and state party elections. You can join or renew today online or pick up an envelope at the office. |
Books, books, books |
Come to the Book Talk at the DPOC Office at 10 am on Saturday, Jan. 18, to talk about your favorite book, whether it is a biography or a cookbook or anything in between. Share what you are currently reading or just get suggestions for your next read. Or, just come and enjoy the company of fellow Democrats and progressives! Also, while you're there, check out the Blue Lending Library. |
Do you know where to find reliable sources? |
As already mentioned, disinformation flooded the zone during the runup to the November election and Democrats paid a heavy price. Make yourself aware of reliable and responsible progressive media in Wisconsin and around the country. And keep pushing back against right-wing lies any time you get a chance.
