You're mad as hell? Screamfest is the answer

As newscaster Howard Beale implored in the classic 1976 film Network, “I want you to go to your window, open it and stick your head out and yell. ‘I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!’”

 

Well, we’ve reached that portion of the Trump administration … in just two short long weeks.

 

The Trump administration is tearing the foundations of our country apart. We are angry. We are scared. And we feel helpless.

 

But we are not helpless. 

 

So here is your invitation to Screamfest 2025 on Feb. 12 at 6:30 at the county party office.

 

Rather than screaming out your window into the void we have something more constructive in mind: a working session for you to write to your representatives about a topic that resonates with you. The one that keeps you up at night. The one that makes you so angry you find yourself silently screaming at the slow walker in front of you at the grocery store. 

 

We want you to channel that fear and anger into something actionable. Screamfest will feature a quick round-table to brainstorm topics for letters and emails. You will be guided in writing a clear, concise message.

 

Then … we write!

 

Bring a laptop so you can send your email right then. If you choose a hand-written letter, we’ll provide the paper, pens and envelopes. Or ... make a phone call instead.

 

Folks, it’s going to be a long four years. We will need to continue to be responsive to the seemingly never-ending, gobsmacking horrors that await us daily.

 

This is not the end.

 

This is the beginning.

Just a reminder that our next monthly meeting on Feb. 10 will feature two candidates for state Department of Public Education Superintendent: Incumbent Jill Underly and challenger Jeff Wright.

As part of the North OAT’s efforts to get involved in important community affairs, we are asking you to take action to help save some valuable resources that are being threatened by the closure of the UW-Fox Valley campus in June.  It’s sad enough that folks are losing jobs and students are losing a local educational resource but the future of so many popular facilities connected to the campus is suddenly in doubt as well. That includes the Barlow Planetarium (27,000 visitors, including 18,000 students); the Arts Center which houses the Black Box Theatre and which serves as valuable space for 17 community groups; The Earth Science Museum (15-20,000 public school visitors last year); the Children’s Center which will mean the loss of yet another already scarce childcare facility; the Community Garden and so much locally produced fresh food; and so much more.   DPOC Monthly Meeting Minutes - UNAPPROVED February 10, 2025, 7:00 pm Welcome and Call to Order : Vice Chair Fenton called meeting to order at 7:01pm and led the pledge/land promise. Approval of minutes : Mary Kohrell shared the January meeting minutes.  Dale Schaber/Penny Bernard Schaber motion/second to approve January 13, 2025 meeting minutes.  Motion carried. College What: Volunteer Appreciation and Gathering How: Sign up or just show up   We are barely two weeks out from the election and we’re all still coping with the traumatic results in whatever ways we can. Some of us are rageful, others grieving. Some of us are numb and tuned out. Others are already thinking about next steps and resistance.   Those of you who poured yourself into the campaign probably have an added layer of feelings, whether it is frustration, futility, disbelief or simple exhaustion. We hope that pride is what you ultimately land on because you have so much reason to feel proud.
