COMMON COUNCIL EMAIL REQUEST
Appleton needs a climate change consultant: E-mail common council TODAY to demand they support one |
The Appleton Common Council will decide on Wednesday whether to apply carryover funds from a pavilion project to support consultancy services for its climate change task force.
Because the city quite simply lacks staff resources to get tangible things done to mitigate climate change it is urgent that the city supports consultants to make sure we are offsetting the lack of action from the federal government.
Below are three templates and I encourage you to make them your own when you write and not just copy and paste. The council needs a two-thirds majority for this to pass so if you live in Appleton please contact the council today and select All Districts (at the bottom of the dropdown menu in the link below) so that your email reaches every council member with your demand. Template 1 It seems more important than ever for our city to take serious action when it comes to climate change. The federal government is abandoning its obligations to fight for the future of our children and grandchildren but we can’t. Do not skimp on doing whatever we can including funding for consultant fees, especially if you want real change and not just words. The money saved through reduced utility expenses or lower maintenance needs could pay for a consultant’s salary in little time, not to mention making us better prepared for the climate calamities we know are coming. As I understand it, Appleton simply doesn’t have the current staff resources to focus on these essential things to put our climate plans into effect. Green Bay, LaCrosse and Eau Claire all funded climate consultants and the results for those cities have been cited by the Wisconsin Climate Table for producing meaningful action.
Template 2
I strongly urge you to use the carryover funds from the pavilion project for consultants to enact our city’s climate plan. What better use of our money than to apply it to offsetting the federal government’s rejection of climate change action. The cost of climate change is immeasurable and skimping on climate mitigations seems so shortsighted. I have heard Appleton simply doesn’t have the staff resources to put into effect such climate actions as applying for grants or for making sure our departments are working together. We have already had to spend so much money in the aftermath of severe storms resulting from climate change and this would be a wise investment that would pay off in short order. And it is a moral imperative that we protect the planet for our future generations.
Template 3 Why would we not spend the carryover funds from the pavilion project on something as important as climate change? Our city simply doesn’t have the staff to put into effect the necessary actions to help mitigate climate disasters. It is especially important now that the federal government has abandoned its responsibilities to lead. Without experts to assess flood risks and greenhouse emissions and water usage and preparedness we simply will flounder. Climate change is complex and we need experts to help guide us to better solutions and better preparedness. We already spend so much each year in the aftermath of climate change events. This is a wise investment and a moral obligation. |
